Common Symptoms of Bone Metastases
Bone metastases are a frequent cause of pain in people with cancer. They can also cause bones to fracture or break. This can make it difficult to keep up your daily activities.
Symptoms of bone metastases can vary. Some symptoms of bone metastases may include:
- Bone pain—The most common symptom of bone metastasis and usually the first symptom that patients notice, often resulting from fractures or spinal cord damage
- Weakness, numbness, trouble urinating—Pressure from metastases on the spinal cord can cause pain, numbness, a weakness in the legs, problems with the bowels or bladder, or numbness in the abdominal area
- Nausea, thirst, constipation, tiredness, confusion, hunger—High blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia), excessive calcium released from diseased bone, may reduce one's appetite, may cause nausea, thirst, constipation, tiredness, confusion, and (if untreated) coma
- General physical discomfort—All the signs and symptoms of bone metastases may contribute to an overall feeling of illness and physical discomfort
